nave in sce teito - a ship on the roof

§ I am not dead....
Our computers are.
And connecting is rare and difficult ma I'll come back soon :o))
In the meanwhile I'll give you an eyecandy: a ship on a roof.
Only in Genoa you could find anything like that.
In the '30s a harbour worker built, with the precious woods of the sailing ships which were dismantled to make place to iron steamers, a gazebo shaped like a ship.
His house was in Cheullia, the hill which connects Carignano to the sea.
Alas it was destroied during IIWW by bombings.
§ Ma un poeta, Edoardo Firpo, fece in tempo a vederla e scrisse:
§ But a poet, Edoardo Firpo, could see it and wrote :

§ Genovese
...Ma a cosa ancon ciù strana
no ve l'ò ancon mostrà .
unna nave in sce un teito
ch'a no se pèu mescià.
Anche s'a mette e veje
e bon ghe sciùscia o vento,
l'ancoa a no se pèu arrancà.
solo d'in lontananza
A deve vedde o mà.....

§ Italiano
.... Ma la cosa ancora più strana
non ve l'ho ancora mostrata:
una nave su un tetto
che non si può muovere.
anche se si montano le vele
e il vento soffia forte,
l'ancora non si può salpare.
Solo in lontananza
può vedere il mare....

§ English
...But a even stranger thing
I have still to show to you :
a ship on a roof
and she cannot move.
Even if the sails are unbind
and the wind is strong
the anchor cannot be lifted up.
Only from far away
she can look at the sea....

Very poor translation, totally lacking of the rythm which is well present in the dialect version.
As usual it is lost in translation.

A presto
See you soon

I think your translation (English) is great and I don't mean to be polite. Not all poetry rhymes :). In fact the really good ones hardly ever, right? :) Good to see you post something again, Rosanna. How nice if I can see this when I visit but shame it's been destroyed :(. If not, I think this will be as famous as the leaning tower of Pisa?
